Safety & Security Committee (SSC)

About us

The Safety & Security Committee (SSC) is responsible for promoting the health, safety, and security of all members of the University community.  We commit ourselves to identify safety concerns, seek solutions, and provide education and awareness.  The Safety & Security Committee partners with University departments and local community organizations to work towards a securer environment.  We believe a safe environment sustains a vibrant and prosperous University community.

The Safety & Security Committee is able to identify safety concerns by providing a security submission form located on the home page of this site. This form is a confidential channel for the University community to notify us of a security concern. We can then address the appropriate individuals regarding these issues. Also, our safety questionnaire solicits feedback from the University community so that we are better able to identify your concerns and formulate solutions.

To seek solutions to concerns, the Safety & Security Committee maintains a very close relationship with the University of Pittsburgh Police Department. Currently, the committee has partnered with the Oakland Transportation Management Association (OTMA), Oakland Business Improvement District (OBID), the University, PennDOT, and other organizations on the Hometown Streets Projects, which is addressing pedestrian safety issues at various intersections along Fifth and Forbes Avenues in Oakland.

The Safety & Security Committee provides education and awareness in a variety of ways to both the Staff Association Council (SAC) membership and the University community. We extend invitations to guest speakers to present on various topics at SAC meetings. The committee’s monthly report spotlights a safety topic. We also distribute safety literature and materials. The committee contributes safety articles which are featured in the SAC Tracks Newsletter. We also sponsor an annual CPR/Basic First Aid certification drive for University faculty, staff, their family and friends.
