CONSOL Energy Inc. is the largest producer of high-Btu bituminous coal in the United States and a leader in the production of coalbed methane gas. In 2008, our revenues exceeded $4.6 billion. The company operates the largest private research and development facility devoted exclusively to coal and energy utilization and production.
CONSOL Energy Inc.’s Research and Development department has provided energy and environmental research and technical services for over 60 years. Our 80-acre facility is located approximately 9 miles south of Pittsburgh in South Park, Pennsylvania. Our mission includes energy development, energy efficiency enhancements, fossil fuel emissions reduction, development of emerging energy-related technologies, and integration of existing technologies for the production and consumption of coal and natural gas. A particular focus of our current program is on the abatement of greenhouse gas emissions. CONSOL R&D's staff of engineers, scientists and technicians provides a wide range of research services, analytical services, source emissions sampling and source emissions characterization services, metallurgical coal characterization services, pilot plant design and operation, and coal pulverizing services.
The tour of CONSOL R&D will start with an introductory overview presentation of CONSOL R&D. This will be followed by a walk-through of our 20,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art analytical laboratory, our carbonization test facility including the pilot coke oven, the coal pulverization facility, the coal mine fire rapid response units, and the pressurized fluidized-bed combustion pilot plant.
