$16.8 Million for Expansion of the Mascaro Sustainability Initiative in the Swanson School of Engineering
The University of Pittsburgh and John C. “Jack” Mascaro (BSCE ’66, MSCE ’80), founder and president of Mascaro Construction Company, are joining together to build a new home for the Mascaro Sustainability Initiative (MSI). The building will provided 42,000 ft2 of laboratory and administrative space that will be integrated with the existing engineering building and will serve as the headquarters for MSI. The new building will extend across the plaza, connecting the main tower to the auditorium building. The second floor in the tower will also become part of MSI, and will be completely renovated to meet MSI’s needs for new research and administrative space. The new MSI building will serve as a tangible example of Pitt’s leadership in green construction, as it will employ many green practices, and will be sufficiently flexible to allow testing of new enabling technology and long-term monitoring of green building performance. The new building represents one of the first key projects in the overall Transformation Plan for Benedum Hall, which calls for a complete renovation and major restructuring of the engineering school’s home.
