MEMS Staff Recieves School Award
12/11/08 Brittany Guthrie, undergraduate administrator, was one of three winners of the inaugural Swanson School Staff Recognition Award. The awards were established this year by U.S. Steel Dean of Engineering Gerald Holder to recognize staff who provide outstanding performance and service to the school and to highlight the accomplishments of staff members.

Faculty Earns NSF Award
05/15/08 Lisa Mauck Weiland, assistant professor, has been awarded a 2008 National Science Foundation CAREER Award. The one-year continuning grant of $64,458 provides funding for her project, "High Performance, Mechanical Robust Ionomeric Sensors."

Pitt Launches Center for Energy to Develop Better Fuel Sources

Faculty Appointed EPDT Program Director
04/14/08 Pradeep P. Fulay, professor, has been appointed program director for the Electronic, Photonic, and Devices Technology Program (EPDT) at the National Science Foundation (NSF). As a program director at NSF, Fulay will have primary areas of responsibility, including micro/nanoelectronics, molecular electronics, spin electronics, organic electronics, power electronics, and micromagnetics.
Faculty Selected by the Finland Distinguished Professor Program
Anthony J. DeArdo, William Kepler Whiteford Professor, received a three-year appointment as a distinguished professor to the University of Oulu in Finland. He was one of four professors from around the world selected by the Finland Distinguished Professor Program (FiDiPro) to lead and advise a research project at a Finnish university. more
Students Participate in National Engineers Week
The Carnegie Science Center celebrated National Engineers February 15 - 16, 2008. ASM International represented one of over 50 event tables that featured presentations and hands-on activities to inspire young people to explore engineering. Materials Science and Engineering Seniors, Jason McCullough, Patricia Nichols, and Gregory Scheuring, demonstrated the unexpected and fascinating capabilities of shape-memory alloys to local high school students.
ME Graduate Student Honored With Inaugural George Washington Prize
02/21/08 University of Pittsburgh engineering graduate student and 2007 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar Benjamin Gordon received the inaugural George Washington Prize, a $5,000 award to be presented annually to a Pitt engineering senior to help further that student's engineering education. Pitt and the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania recognized Gordon at ESWP's 124th Annual Banquet Feb. 20 at Heinz Field.
