Maher recently approved graduate and undergraduate certificates in nuclear engineering--the only nuclear engineering tracks in Western Pennsylvania. The certificates are available through the Swanson School's recently established nuclear engineering program, part of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS). Faculty Elected APS Fellow10/17/2007 Peyman Givi, William Kepler Whiteford Professor, has been elected as Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), with the citation "For pioneering computational research on turbulent reactive flows, and especially for the development of the filtered density function methodology." Faculty Elected ASME Fellow08/30/2007 Jeffrey S. Vipperman, associate professor, has been elected as Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Vipperman is recognized for his significant engineering achievements and contributions to the mechanical engineering profession. Faculty Awarded IEEE-UFFC Outstanding Paper08/20/2007 Qing-Ming Wang, associate professor, received the IEEE-UFFC Outstanding Paper Award 2006 for "Performance Evaluation of a Valveless Micropump Driven by a Ring-Type Piezoelectric Actuator". This paper was one of three outstanding papers selected out of 228 full papers. Materials Science and Engineering Major Awarded ACerS ScholarshipAnthony Finoli, materials science and engineering major, was awarded the J. Earl Frazier Memorial Scholarship by the Pittsburgh section of The American Ceramic Society (ACerS). Faculty Named 2007 Engineer of the YearPeyman Givi, William Kepler Whiteford Professor, has been named 2007 Engineer of the Year by the Pittsburgh Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). School of Engineering Student Receives Goldwater Scholarship04/04/2007 Benjamin O. Gordon, a mechanical engineering major, was among the 317 awardees named by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. Faculty Awarded SOE Diversity Award3/2/2007 Anne M. Robertson, associate professor, was awarded the School of Engineering Diversity Award for her distinguished accomplishments in recruiting and mentoring female and minority students. Cho Awarded Three-Year, $234,179 Grant02/01/2007 Sung Kwon Cho, assistant professor, received a National Science Foundation unsolicited grant ($234,179 for three years) for the development of micro bubble tweezers for individual cell manipulation and ultrasonic cell therapy and a Department of Defense Small Business Innovation Research phase II grant ($150,000 for 21 months) from the U.S. Homeland Security Advanced Research Project Agency for the development of channel-to-droplet sample extraction and purification. Cho’s work on microparticle sampling (Lab Chip, 6, 137–44, 2006) with his student Yuejun Zhao was recognized as an application highlight in Chemical Technology magazine. Pitt Honors College Senior, 2007 Rhodes Scholar Named to USA Today's 2007 All-USA College Academic First Team02/15/07 Daniel E. Armanios, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering and political science and 2007 Rhodes Scholar, has made USA Today's 2007 All-USA College Academic First Team. Armanios was one of 20 students selected from 600 candidates for the first team. |
