About the IE Server System

The Industrial Engineering Server System is run primarily on Windows Server 2003.  The system has three servers that utilize the Distributed File System and File Replication Service to maintain three copies of stored data.  This allows for servers to be removed from service for updating or maintenance with no interruption in service.  The servers also run a service known as Volume Shadow Copy that allow users to access previous versions of files and in some cases even recover deleted files without the need to contact system administrators.  The other servers run by IE include a Sharepoint Server that is currently being used to test the functionality of the collaborative software from Microsoft.

Learn About The Features

  • Volume Shadow Copy Service is a Microsoft addition to its server product. This service only applies to files stored on the file server. It allows the recovery of previous versions of a file and can even be used to recover deleted files. A FLASH Demonstration is available here. Other information can be found here.
Download the Volume Shadow Copy Client here.

This is needed on personal computers to access the previous versions tab. DO NOT attempt to install this on any computer you do not own. More information and instructions can be found about Volume Shadow Copy Services under How Do I... ?.

  • Learn about DFS (Distributed File Systems) at Microsoft.com. DFS routes your requests for files to servers that are available to answer your file requests. A FLASH Demonstration is available here. Other information can be found here.
  • Learn about FRS (File Replication Services) at Microsoft.com. FRS is responsible for keeping multiple copies of your files on different servers. Information can be found here.
