Undergraduate Technical ElectivesAll IE students take four technical electives; in case of co-op, ENGR 1090 will count as one of these as long as at least three rotations are completed and a final co-op report is turned in as required. At least two of the four technical electives must come from the IE elective undergraduate course offerings. The only time this requirement can be relaxed is when a student participates in co-op and also opts to get a Minor in another field; in such instances, only one IE technical elective is required. The other two technical electives are "free" electives. The student may take these as well from the IE department or from another department. There is no prespecified list of technical electives from outside the department and approval of a particular course is left to the discretion of the student's advisor. In general, some guidelines must be followed when choosing these. First, the course must be from an area that is related to engineering (i.e., it cannot be a humanities or social science course). Second, it must not be a course that is offered at a very basic or introductory level (e.g., lower level math, science, business or computer programming courses). Third, it must not significantly duplicate courses that are required as part of the student's IE program (e.g., cost accounting or management). Typical areas from which technical electives can be chosen include other engineering disciplines, math, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, information sciences and business. If you have question please contact your advisor, the undergraduate coordinator or the department chair. |
