Undergraduate AdvisingEvery Industrial Engineering student has a faculty member as an academic advisor who guides the student through his or her program until graduation. The faculty advisor is assigned to the student in the first term of the sophomore year. Close and continuous contact with the faculty advisor is encouraged. During the student's initial entry into the department (either through the freshman program or as a transfer), the undergraduate coordinator for the department acts as the advisor and helps with developing an initial study plan and registration for classes for the first time. The advisor's role is to:
Consequently it is essential for the student to actively interact with his or her advisor and develop a comfortable relationship with this person. If a student wishes to change advisors for any reason whatsoever, the chairman or the undergraduate coordinator may be contacted and they will assign the student to another faculty member of his or her choice. Most faculty members have posted office hours when they can be contacted for general questions or advice. During the registration period faculty members post specific hours when they will be available to review their advisees' programs and to help them choose classes for the next term. In general, it is a good idea for students to first contact the advisor via telephone or e-mail and set up an appointment to discuss registration, classes, career related issues, personal matters or anything else of relevance. For their part, faculty members are committed to meeting with their advisees as often as necessary, and at least once a term. |
