Laboratories Automation and Robotics LaboratoryThe Automation and Robotics Laboratory (ARL) was established in 1984 in the College of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and relocated to the School of Engineering, University of Pittsburgh in August 1996. The ARL serves as a teaching and research laboratory in the fields of Computer Aided Design, Computer Aided Manufacturing and Robotics. The laboratory is engaged in cutting edge research in CAD, Feature Reasoning, Assembly Planning, Geometric Reasoning, and Robotics. The laboratory is now collaborating with the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, the Bioengineering Department and industries for research in medical devices design and manufacture as well as in robotic assisted surgery. Objectives:The Automation and Robotics Laboratory pursues research aimed at automated technologies for design and manufacture of mechanical and electro-mechanical engineered devices and systems. These include research in:
The Automation and Robotics Laboratory has received funding from the National Science Foundation, ALCOA, Inc., Mallinckrodt, Inc., Digital Equipment Corporation, Respironics, Inc., Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, Ben Franklin Technology Center of Western Pennsylvania, NATO, General Electric, IBM, United Technologies Corporation, and the U.S. Army Research Labs. |
