Graduate Graduate Admissions Requirements

Expectations of Applicants:

  • Possess an undergraduate or graduate degree from an ABET-accredited program in any engineering discipline, or a degree in a complementary technical discipline, such as mathematics, physics or computer science.
  • Undergraduate knowledge of probability and statistics, differential equations, linear algebra, and proficiency in computer programming is required.
  • Students who cannot demonstrate these skills will be placed in appropriate undergraduate courses; these undergraduate courses do not count towards a graduate degree.

Required Examinations:

Interviewing with a Faculty Member:
It is recommend that Ph.D. applicants have an interview with a faculty member, however this is not a requirement for admission.

The following items are required before your application will be considered:

  • Application for Admissions to Graduate Study - School of Engineering
  • "Goals/Objectives" Statement
  • Official GRE Scores - (not required for Part Time Students)
  • Official TOEFL Scores for International Applicants (the University of Pittsburgh requires a minimum score of 550 for admission)
  • Additional Forms for International Applicants - School of Engineering
  • Financial Support Statement
  • Offical Transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) educational institutions
  • Application Fees: $50
  • Graduate Assistantship Application (if applying for aid - for Full Time study only)
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation
  • No Application will be considered until all application items have been received.

For admission in the Fall term, the application deadline is March 1st and for Spring term adissions the deadline is July 1st. The Summer deadline is February 1st. If you wish to be considered for financial aid your complete application must be received no later than January 15th.
