IIE February 2006 Meeting
WHAT:   FedEx Home Delivery Vehicle Route Planning System
When you order something on-line, have you ever been curious about how the drivers at FedEx are able to find your house, or how they know that you requested to have your package delivered at 6:00 PM when you will be home from work to sign for it?  With all of the packages that a driver has to deliver in a given day, how do they know the best route to take to deliver the packages with the most efficiency?

Our February IIE program will answer all of these questions and more.  Come find out how the FedEx Home Delivery Vehicle Route Planning System increases the efficiency and productivity of the delivery routes in our network.  Learn about the technology that determines the optimal route for the drivers each day as well as how the data contained in the barcode of your package allows the planning system to identify when and where you need to have it delivered.

Dinner is being catered by Smokey Bones BBQ and will be served prior to the start of the program.

IIE March 2006 Meeting
WHAT:   What IE’s Need to Know About Statistics
As engineers we work with data sets on a daily basis.  We collect data in order to understand, quantify, explain, and solve engineering problems.  It is critical that we not only understand and correctly apply the basic statistics we use to analyze data, but are also able to easily explain these principles to our audience.  This program will focus on the principles of engineering statistics and the practical application of these principles in the various industries.  We will begin with learning how to evaluate data using histograms, measures of central tendency, spread, and shape.  With a clear picture of our data, we will learn how to select the metric that conveys the correct information to our audience.  We will then shift from data analysis to proper data collection.  Techniques for determining the correct sample size for variable and attribute data as well as desired accuracy and confidence levels will be discussed.  Finally, we will review examples of regression analysis and its applications in various industries.  Participants will leave this program with:
  • Knowledge of the principles of basic statistics and the ability to clearly communicate these principles
  • An understanding of when and why to apply different metrics of central tendency
  • The ability to determine the correct sample size for variable and attribute data
  • Practical application of regression analysis in various industries

    WHAT:   Annual Student Chapter Night
Does Your Company Culture Support High Performance?
Has your lean or six sigma experience been one of fits and starts?  If so, your company’s culture may not fully support the changes in behavior and skill application that you are expecting most of your people to make.  In this presentation, participants will learn how to use a simple assessment tool to detect key cultural inconsistencies.  They will also work to begin identifying and developing high leverage, low cost improvements that they can make to help better fuel their lean, six sigma, or other improvement initiatives.

    IIE November 2006 Meeting
    WHAT:   Membership Outreach Meeting
Our November “Membership Outreach” event planning is finalized.  We are planning a very different kind of program for November – one that involves you helping us to shape our chapter plan for next year.  Many of you have gotten back to us with ideas for this event – thank you!  Here are some examples of what you can expect from this “reaching out” program.  We view it as a very informal, one-on-one opportunity with chapter leadership to:

    - share your thoughts on what you like about our chapter
    - share your thoughts about what you would like to see changed in our chapter
    - share your thoughts regarding programs, membership, and communication
    - network over some food and drinks
    - have some fun!

And, as Jeff Arnold mentioned in the last several newsletters, our strong financial position affords us the opportunity to do this at no cost to you, our members.  We strongly believe this is a great use of our chapter development fund dollars, and that this kind of event is an investment that will yield some very valuable feedback from our membership.  So, the date, time, and place are all set – now we just need you to show up and bring your ideas!
