Welcome

The Shankar Research Group performs research in the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh under the direction of Prof. M. Ravi Shankar. Our research focuses on understanding the behavior of materials over length-scales ranging from the macro to the nano, as a function of composition, processing history and microstructural design. Research interests include thermal and mechanical behavior of nanocrystalline metals and amorphous alloys, mechanics and property evolution in manufacturing processes and design of multi-functional materials.

The multidisciplinary nature of this research offers stimulating opportunities for experimental and theoretical studies involving synthesis of a variety of concepts from solid mechanics, materials science, solid state physics and thermodynamics.

Current Research

We are presently exploring the microstructure evolution and behavior of multi-phase materials subjected to severe thermo-mechanical deformation. In another study, we are investigating methodologies for minimizing metal working fluid usage in machining processes.

Applications of this research include the development of highly efficient grain-refining master alloys for aluminum castings, unusually stable high strength nanostructured materials for high-temperature structural applications and environmentally benign manufacturing processes.

Acknowledgement

We gratefully acknowledge support from the National Science Foundation (Awards #0826010, #0856626, #0927410), University of Pittsburgh - Central Research Development Fund, The Mascaro Sustainability Initiative, The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (Faculty Development Grant) and The Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (John J. McCambridge Grant).
