What’s It All About?

Pitt’s School of Engineering is like being in a small school with the benefits of a large university. The closeness and one-on-one attention students get makes the transitions from high school to college super easy.—Lindsay Hollowood

Okay, you’ve got a nice fat SAT score, so numbers don’t scare you. And you’re curious about how things work—so much so that you’ve been upsetting your parents for years by dissecting expensive appliances and electronic equipment. Or maybe you just enjoy math and science and like to solve problems but are all thumbs mechanically.

Whatever the case, put it to good use. Be an engineer. “But what discipline?” you ask.

At Pitt, you don’t have to specialize from the beginning. All first-year students are part of the Freshman Engineering Program, which is designed to introduce you to the various departmental offerings at Pitt. In addition to the traditional core “stuff”—calculus, chemistry, physics, and two innovative courses that provide an introduction to engineering problem solving and methods—you get to choose a humanities or social science elective each term. You also participate in the Freshman Engineering Seminar, where you learn about each of the school’s nine departments and programs. Then, there’s the Freshman Engineering Leadership Team, a group of upper-class students who facilitate the seminar and help around the freshman office. They will assist you in making your first year successful and share their own success stories with you.

At the end of your freshman year, you’ll have a big decision—what will your major be? But don’t panic! Students in good academic standing (2.00 QPA on a 4.00 scale) are guaranteed acceptance into the program of their choice.

Besides coursework, the Freshman Engineering Program also offers individual advising, tutorial services, peer support, and plenty of personal attention. The advisers want you to succeed and will use the numerous resources they have to help you reach your goals.

During my freshman year, I was not expecting to work in groups as much as we did. I really liked that part because it is amazing how much you can learn about that subject and the members of your group.—Lauren Paoletti
