Engineering has taught me to have better time management skills, to push myself to be the best I can be.—Katie Fronczak

College of Arts and Sciences/Engineering Joint Degree
Let’s say you love the idea of majoring in engineering, but you don’t want to abandon your interests in history, languages, or even philosophy. At Pitt, we say, “Why not study both?”

In our unique five-year College of Arts and Sciences (CAS)/Engineering program, you many combine your engineering degree with the liberal arts degree of your choice. As a result, you graduate with two degrees in just five years. In the past, engineering students have combined mechanical engineering with music, electrical engineering with economics, materials science with philosophy, chemical engineering with biology, civil engineering with urban planning, engineering physics with Spanish, and industrial engineering with literature. The possibilities are endless.

University Honors College

Are you up for a challenge? The University Honors College will give it to you. Freshman engineering students may participate in the Fesseden Honors in Engineering Program offered jointly with Pitt’s nationally recognized University Honors College. This provides high-achieving students with challenging courses, special academic advising, and research opportunities. Visit the Web site to learn more about the honors programs.

Engineering/Teacher Certification Program

Did you have a teacher who really inspired you? Would you like to do the same? We have a program just for you! Earn your Pennsylvania teacher certification in either mathematics or science education while pursuing your BS in engineering with this one-of-a-kind program that you can complete in five years. See the Web site for more information.

Study Abroad for Engineers

Lots of people are psyched about Study Abroad for Engineers. Yes, this is for real—a study abroad program that exists just for engineers. And its office is located right in Benedum Hall. How’s that for convenience?

The program was designed to help more engineering students go abroad and study engineering. Some study abroad opportunities let the students learn about the roots of what they are studying at Pitt. For example, students who are studying structural engineering or materials science may spend a year studying at the University of Sheffield in England. Sheffield is known as the Metals Capital of the World because the formula for steel was invented in Sheffield. Students who are interested in energy can spend five weeks at Pitt and then six weeks studying in Australia at the University of New South Wales, one of Australia’s top engineering schools. This program, entitled “Pitt Engineering in Australia: Energy Today,” allows students to learn about energy by way of classroom discussions and field trips, and they can earn a special certificate!

You may also pursue a Certificate in International Engineering Studies. The certificate program highlights engineering through cultural enrichment and language studies. Even more certificates are offered through The University Center for International Studies, such as Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, Russian and Eastern European Studies, and Western European Studies.
