DiversityThe Swanson School of Engineering has a diverse group of students. Because the University is located on an urban campus, it attracts people from all around the world. As a woman or an underrepresented student, you will not be alone at the University of Pittsburgh or the Swanson School of Engineering.
Approximately 25 percent of Pitt engineers are female—a number that far exceeds the national average. So don’t be surprised if you walk though the engineering school and see quite a few women. The school encourages support systems for these female engineers too. The Pitt student chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) provides professional and academic support for female students by arranging contact with women engineers in industry, conducting monthly meetings with speakers, attending regional and national conferences, and promoting professional employment opportunities. In addition to SWE, other diverse engineering organizations include the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Together with the EXCEL program, these student organizations are dedicated to promoting camaraderie, professional support, and career opportunities. Navigate
