PLUS 3

The University of Pittsburgh's School of Engineering and College of Business Administration have combined to offer you a new unique study abroad opportunity at the start of every summer: Plus 3.

Plus 3 is a three-credit, two-week optional add-on to CBA's required Managing Complex Environments (MCE) course and Engineering's ENG 12 course. The program is an international research project held immediately after the end of spring term. The program is targeted to students between their freshman and sophomore years that involves teams of both business and engineering students who will work together on a project involving travel in one of the international destinations listed below.

Travel Dates

Brazil, Chile, and Germany
Depart: Saturday, May 3, 2008; Return: Saturday, May 17, 2008 or Sunday, May 18

China
Depart: Wednesday, May 7, 2008; Return: Wednesday, May 21, 2008
(Due to holidays in China the trip has different dates)

COSTS:

Summer 2008 Program Fee: $2950

Fee includes:

  • Tuition for three credits
  • Housing
  • Some meals
  • Field trip(s) to various sites of cultural importance
  • Visa
  • Health and accident insurance
  • International Airfare from the following U.S. city is included in the cost
         Brazil: Round-trip - New York - JFK
         Chile: Round-trip - New York - JFK
         China: Round-trip - Newark International
         Germany: Round-trip - Washington, D.C. - Dulles International

Beginning in 2008, all engineers that obtain a 3.0 GPA or better during their first semester will receive a $500 scholarship to be used on a Plus 3 program (pending acceptance and no disciplinary issues).

Additional Expenses:

Students will need to budget for meals not covered in program fee and personal expenses. An estimated budget for these expenses is shown below. Because students' spending habits vary depending on living and travel preferences, this should only be a rough approximation.

  • Administrative Fee $350 (billed through billpay upon registration)
  • Personal expenses $ 300-800 (dependent on spending habits)

Requirements

  • Must be registered during the Spring 2008 term for the Managing Complex Environments (MCE Business) course or one of the Engineering 0012/0715 courses.
  • Must have at least a 2.75 QPA (CBA Students) and 2.50 QPA (Engineering students)
  • Students must have completed two semesters at Pitt prior to the program departure.
  • There is no language requirement for this program.
  • Must attend 12 hours of mandatory workshop classes during the spring term of 2008 ( four three-hour workshops on Sunday afternoons).
  • During the trips, students visit a number of companies, attend lectures and cultural events, meet with local students, and sightsee. Students must participate in all activities and keep a journal.
  • Students will prepare a written and oral group project related to one of the company visits to be presented during the fall term.
  • There is no language requirement for this program.
  • Students MUST have a valid passport at the time of submitting application.
  • Students under disciplinary sanctions will not be admitted to the program.
  • If a student obtains a disciplinary sanction after admission to the program participation will be revoked.

Applications

Completed applications are due to the Study Abroad Office no later than Thursday, January 10, 2008. Individual interviews with the faculty and staff members participating in the programs will be conducted soon after the application deadline. Students will be informed of program acceptance by mid February 2008.
