![]() Community Partner: Oakland Transportation Management Association Project Description:
The purpose of our team is to better inform the Oakland and neighboring communities about the available resources that will help them have a healthier, more active lifestyle by improving the Oakland Transportation Management Agency Walk Challenge map. Currently, there is an existing map that has 10 walk paths, all roughly 2,000 steps (1 mile) long. However, there is no indication of the difficulty level of the paths on the map. Many beginner participants to the program were surprised by the hardness of the some of the paths and had trouble completing the route. Depending on the elevation difference between the various areas the routes pass through, the difficulty level of the paths vary. Therefore, some kind of difficulty level assessment is necessary for each path and incorporated into the existing map. Another addition to the map that would benefit the members of the program would be a calorie expenditure estimate for each path. Overall, OTMA has requested for a more informative map, including difficulty analysis and calorie expenditure, in the form of a brochure and an online version. Right now, the online version of the walk map is simply a PDF file of the brochure map. We hope by making the map more interactive, such as displaying the difficulty level and the calorie expenditure of each path when clicked upon, the users would be better informed and interested in the program. By improving on the existing map, OTMA hopes to encourage more community members to get more involved in the walk challenge program. |
