Design of Trail Head Connection to Eliza Furnace Trail

Community Partner: Hazelwood Initiative

Team:

Andrew Gidley, Srilaxmi Komanduri, Laura Dempsey and Sameer Shroff

Problem Statement:

Hazelwood is a historic neighborhood in Pittsburgh, PA that currently is being revitalized by the Hazelwood Initiative in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office on Community Initiatives, Council President Doug Shields, the Urban Redevelopment Authority, local businesses and neighborhood residents. In order to assist development of this area, our team focused on designing a means to connect the existing Eliza Furnace trail, running along the Monongahela River, with a newly proposed trail originating in the Hazelwood Greenway. Potential use of the trail would be by both pedestrians and cyclists. Intersection analysis, geographical surveying and exterior renovations to the trail will be used to solve the problem of overcoming obstacles hindering trail-users from traveling along this proposed path.
