Design of Green Space Trail

Community Partner: Hill House Assoiation

Team:

Rory Coble, Kristin Gottron, Sunsharay Chestnut, and Gautam Vangipuram

Problem Statement:

These trails are being constructed with the help of the Find the Rivers! Initiative and the city of Pittsburgh, who hope to connect all of metropolitan area via walking routes. By providing walkable public pathways to the residents of the Hill District that will ultimately connect the Allegheny River with the Monongahela River, the hope is that these paths will inject life into the town, encourage commercial development, and revive the community both economically and physiologically. Additionally, because of the Hill district’s elevation over the surrounding land, it provides some spectacular views of downtown and Oakland. The trails also hope to encompass the rich history of the area by linking historical sites such as the house of Pulitzer Prize winning playwright August Wilson. The work that our team concentrated on was connecting these green spaces and a planned overlook on Arcena Street and other historical sites, which will allow visitors to take advantage of these scenic views. We worked to develop an efficient way to connect existing walking trails and overlooks on this trail. We extensivel explored and analyzed the area to identify the most promising paths.
