Patient Transport Analysis

Community Partner: UPMC Artifical Heart Program

Team:

Daniela, Benjamin, Mark, Christine

Problem Statement:

The Artificial Heart Program is one of the best of its kind in the country. They have been considered one of the top programs for many years. The Artificial Heart program was not only the first to inplant an artificial heart, they have had contributing roles in important research.

We worked with the Artificial Heart Program in order to devise a system for elevator use while transporting patients from one place to another. As of now, there is limited elevator space which is available for patient transportation. This contributes to several problems, including having to disconnect certain suppot devices when moving patients. We were charged with trying to find a means to make transportation somewhat easier due to the given circumstances. We established a small trainee program dedicated to the problems that are faced when moving patients. This included small laminated pamphlets and a powerpoint presentation.
