Central Oakland Pedestrian Hazard Mapping

Community Partner: Community Human Services Corporation

Team:

Steven Bone, Richard Jeffries, Andrea Poe, Matthew Yarlett

Problem Statement:

Our goal was to investigate the streets around Central Oakland, particularly around Bates Street and around the Boulevard of the Allies, in order to encourage walking. We will be looking for pedestrian hazards and factors that may discourage or prohibit walking through the area, make crossing streets dangerous, or pose other dangers to pedestrians. Examples of such hazards include a lack of crosswalks, no pedestrian crossing light, dangerous sidewalks, and roads that are too narrow.

Working with our community partner, the Community Human Services Corporation, we worked towards the group’s overall goal of strengthening communities and increasing the well being of those in Oakland. CHSC’s considerations include the differences between temporary residents, such as students, and permanent residents, such as people who have been in the area for numerous years; and therefore, we considered how the difference affects pedestrians and transportation through the area. With the information we gathered from exploring the streets in Central Oakland, we analyzed the data, and created an accurate description of the conditions of streets and sidewalks in the area. For the major problems that we found, we developed possible solutions that would further the effort to reaching the final goal to encourage walking. With all of this information, we were able to propose a recommendation for a course of action, and we were able to provide supportive data for this recommendation.
