Find The Rivers! Hill District to the Allegheny River

Community Partner: Hill House Association

Team:

Frank Petraglia, Sherri hall, Kyra Davis, Mark Juhas

Problem Statement:

Our project was to develop a route from the Hill District on Bedford, down to the Allegheny River. This was in part with Find the Rivers!, an organization that promotes easy access to riversides in the Pittsburgh area, and the Hill House Association, an association that looks to restore the lost beauty of the Hill District. Our number one priority was finding a way down the hill running alongside Bigelow Blvd, across roads of heavy traffic, and down to Polish Hill.

The objective of this project was to enable pedestrians living in the Hill District to easily make their way down to the Allegheny River. This project was proposed by the Hill House Association, an organization which provides numerous services for the Hill District, in conjunction with Denys Candy, managing partner of The Community Partners Institute. Our project supported the “Find the Rivers!” project, which aims at bringing the rivers of Pittsburgh closer to the Hill District in order to revitalize economic and recreational opportunities. This process involved creating a pathway that will provide a safe and efficient way to the Allegheny from the Hill. A marker system indicating segment lengths and path directions will be set in place for pedestrians’ exercise purposes. Keeping in mind the vision of the Hill House Association, to expand the community both economically and environmentally, a route will be created providing a picturesque view of the city of Pittsburgh.
