Problem Statement

The purpose of this project is to develop a means of organizing information regarding physical therapy equipment used at the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children (WPSBC) and to do so in a way that is accessible to and useful for the school’s staff. The main rationales for this project are to effectively categorize the myriad of equipment, making the information readily accessible to staff members, and to efficiently track the quantity of devices in the school’s present inventory, preventing unnecessary spending on redundant purchases. Design specifications for organizing the information include categorizing the equipment with respect to attributes such as mobility and function. In addition, manufacturer and warranty information would be available to our clients in order to streamline the administrative tasks associated with preventive maintenance, warranty concerns, and recall issues. Our goals also include the creation of a human decipherable number-based bar code system and the utilization of database technology so that the personnel at WPSBC can easily identify the type, description, and availability of the equipment in their two storage facilities.

Community Partner

Western Pennsylvania School for the Blind

The Mission of the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children is to be a leading institution for providing quality special education services that foster maximum independence for children and young adults with visual impairment and multiple disabilities. Furthermore, the School's Outreach efforts are designed to assist all western Pennsylvania youth with visual impairments to reach their full potential by delivering programs and services to them and their families.

Project Description

As a team, our responsibility includes taking a physical inventory of the equipment located at the WPSBC’s two facilities and creating a web-based database of the inventoried equipment. In close collaboration with Team 6, we will develop a means of categorizing the myriad of equipment used at the school. Our goal is to utilize bar code and database technology in order to allow the personnel at the WPSBC to easily identify the type, description, and availability of the equipment on site. In addition, our system will allow the staff at the school to easily maintain the inventory database so that they can focus their attention on the needs of the deserving children at the facility.
