Undergraduate Minor

Requirements

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers a minor for students in the School of Engineering who are not majoring in electrical engineering. The minor will be of interest to undergraduate engineering students who wish to develop expertise in areas such as electronics, instrumentation, automatic control, signal processing, or digital devices for application to their major discipline. Requirements for engineering physics are slightly different than those for other students because of the extensive overlap between the two programs (see below).

Requirements (non-Engineering Physics)

The requirements for the electrical engineering minor include:

  • EE 0031: ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS 1
    Pre- or Corequisites: PHYS 0175, MATH 0240
  • EE 0041: ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS 2
    Prerequisite: EE 0031; Pre- or Corequisite: MATH 0240
  • EE 0132: DIGITAL LOGIC
    Pre- or Corequisites: PHYS 0175, MATH 0240
  • Plus three additional elective electrical engineering courses

Students can select the three electives from any courses offered in electrical engineering. Students must obtain a QPA average of at least 2.0 in the courses required for the minor, with a passing grade (D- or higher) in all courses. Since most EE courses have specific prerequisites, students should be sure that they have the required courses for the electives they wish to take.

The suggestions below are appropriate for students with interests in a particular area, and they meet prerequisite requirements:

  • Electronics: EE 0257, EE 1247, and EE 1238 or EE 1286
  • Instrumentation: EE 1201, EE 0257, and EE 1247
  • Digital Systems: EE 0142, EE 1185, and EE 1192 or EE 1194
  • Signals and Systems: EE 1552, EE 1562, and EE 1673

Theses courses have some or all of the three required courses (EE 0031, EE 0041, and EE 0132) as prerequisites. In most cases, students should take the required courses by the junior year in order to be prepared to take advanced courses before graduation.

Requirements for Engineering Physics

The requirements for the electrical engineering minor for students in the Engineering Physics Program include (in addition to EE courses that are already part of their degree requirements):

  • EE 0132: DIGITAL LOGIC
    Pre- or Corequisites: PHYS 0175, MATH 0240
  • EE 0142: COMPUTER ORGANIZATION
    Prerequisite: EE 0132

Since engineering physics students take EE 0031 (Electrical Circuits and Systems 1), EE 0041 (Electrical Circuits and Systems 2), and several other EE courses as part of their degree requirements, they need only complete the two extra courses listed above to obtain the EE minor.
