Classification of Power Quality
Disturbances
Abstract
Power quality (PQ) has become an issue of increasing interest in power
engineering since 1970s. The interest in power quality involves all three
parties concerned with the power business: utility companies, equipment
manufacturers, and electric power customers. Utilities regard PQ from the
system reliability point of view. Equipment
manufacturers, on the other hand, consider PQ as being that level which allows
for proper operation of their equipment, while customers consider good PQ that
insures the continuous running of processes, operations, and businesses. The current structure of power markets has
dictated that the customer’s point of interest takes precedence when
considering PQ problems. The reasons
behind such interest are mainly: the worldwide trend towards the deregulation
of power markets; the increased complexity of power networks; and the
sensitivity of modern loads to irregularities of the power supply system. The
classification of power quality disturbances and the causes of these
disturbances will be presented
