COURSE DESCRIPTION:                                 

  • Basic tools in understanding a wide range of engineering applications of photonics
  • Guided-wave optics: planar waveguides, optical fibers
  • Resonant cavities, lasers, pn junctions, semiconductor lasers
  • Photodetector, optic modulators, integrated optics elements
  • Polarization and modulation of light

MARKING SCHEME

Assignment:                             10%

Middle term:                            30%  

Final exam:                              60%

Total:                                     100%

The final score is the sum of scores from quizzes, assignments, and the final, there is no curve.

 

Letter grades:

A+: 95%-100%             A: 85%-89%                   A-: 80%-84%                    B (+/-): 70%-79%         

C(+/-): 60%-69%          D: 55%-59%                   F: 0%-54.9%       

Policy:

  • No late withdrawal
  • Make-up exams can only be arranged with a 48-hour notice before exams and with valid proofs
  • Appeal of your grade can be made within 7 days when it becomes available
  • Under NO circumstance, a F grade can be changed to a passing grade once it is assigned
