Samuel Dickerson, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was a first place winner in the annual Big Idea Competition, sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence. He won Best New Product Idea for his idea of a low-cost, portable cytometer. A cytometer is a device for counting the number of cells in a fluid sample, such as blood. The mobile nature of the product would enable diagnostic tests, such as for AIDS, to occur more easily in rural medical clinics in developing countries. This product idea stems from his current research and his co-advisors are Professors Steven P. Levitan from ECE and Donald M. Chiarulli from Computer Science.
