Director of College Program (Pitt EXCEL)
::

Alaine M. Allen is the director of the Pitt EXCEL Program.  Her work responsibilities include oversight of the college component, supervision of Pitt EXCEL Program staff, developing and coordinating academic programs, interacting with student organizations within the Swanson School of Engineering, managing summer enrichment sessions and maintaining relationships with administrators, faculty and other departments within the University of Pittsburgh.  Alaine has worked at the University since 1994.  She was formerly the assistant director of the Pitt Engineering Career Access Program (PECAP) Pre-College Component, a physics teacher for the Woodland Hills School District, and a graduate research assistant for QUASAR, a math education reform project at the University of Pittsburgh Learning Research and Development Center. 

Alaine has a Bachelor of Science degree in physics/secondary education from Lincoln University and a Master of Education degree in policy, planning and evaluation from the University of Pittsburgh.  Alaine Allen is a doctoral student in the Higher Education Management Program of the University of Pittsburgh, School of Education.  Her research interest involves identifying the factors that enable minority students to successfully transition from high school to college.


Academic Counselor and Retention Coordinator

Janard A. Pendleton serves as an academic counselor and student retention coordinator for the Pitt EXCEL Program. His responsibilities include advising and counseling students, assisting with the development, implementation and evaluation of program activities, motivating students and developing their leadership skills, and monitoring student progress.

Janard’s previous work experiences include serving as a math teacher and guidance counselor for the Pittsburgh Public School District, and working as a child and adolescent therapist for Mercy Behavioral Health. Janard has Bachelor of Science degrees in Psychology and Sociology/Criminal Justice from St. Vincent College, and a Master of Social Work degree in direct practice with individuals, families, and small groups from the University of Pittsburgh. He is dedicated to teaching students effective coping strategies that can be used to ensure their academic success.

Academic Counselor and Peer Mentoring Coordinator

Yvette R. Moore is an academic counselor for the Pitt EXCEL Program.  Her responsibilities include academic counseling and coordinating peer mentoring initiatives. She also assists with various programs that promote academic success for students in the Swanson School of Engineering.

Prior to arriving at the University of Pittsburgh, Ms. Moore was employed at Shippensburg University where she worked in the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs. Ms. Moore holds a Bachelor of Secondary Education in History with a minor in Anthropology from Shippensburg University, and a Master of Science in Gerontology also from Shippensburg University. Ms. Moore is committed to working with students in order to help them achieve their highest potential.
