INVESTING NOW

INVESTING NOW activities are designed to stimulate, support, and reward the high academic performance of high school students who are underrepresented in engineering, math, and science careers. Students are recruited in the spring of eighth grade and participate in year-round activities through the twelfth grade. Annually, approximately 175 students from the metropolitan Pittsburgh area participate in INVESTING NOW activities.

Students will participate in activities focused on six areas:

  1. Student Support - Academic advising, tutoring, and workshops on strategies for academic success.
  2. Academic Enrichment - Summer math, science, and writing classes; SAT preparation, vocabulary building and basic math skills workshops; hands-on science experiences.
  3. College Planning - College preparation and financial aid workshops, college student shadowing.
  4. Career Awareness - Career awareness seminars, career shadowing.
  5. Cultural Awareness - Cultural awareness classes and seminars.
  6. Parental Involvement- College planning and financial aid workshops, academic success and transition to high school workshops, program volunteers.

Statistics

The Class of 2005 is the twelfth student cohort to participate in INVESTING NOW from ninth through twelfth grade. Significant statistics for this group include:
  • 100 percent enrolled in college
  • 76 percent were high or honor graduates
  • 65 percent chose an engineering, mathematics, or science major
  • 29 percent enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh.
Over the past seven years, 99 percent of INVESTING NOW graduates enrolled in college and 52 percent choose an engineering, mathematics or science major.
