We are developing a conducting polymer-based smart system that will sense neuro-inflammatory substances in vivo, producing an electrical signal.  The system will then release anti-inflammatory drugs in response to the generated signal. Early detection of inflammation-signature molecules and local delivery of appropriate intervention can be used to protect implanted neural prostheses or prevent the onset of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.
