A&S Skills and General Education Requirements

General Writing
(up to 4 cr.)

Pass placement exam

OR

Completion of ENGCMP 0200 with C- or better

Algebra (up to 6 cr.)

Pass placement exam or score 600+ on Math SAT OR

Completion of MATH 0020 (College Algebra 2) or MATH 0200 (Preparation for Calculus) with C- or better

Writing Courses

Completion of one W-designated course in the student's major, plus one in another field

Quantitative Reasoning
(3 cr.)

Completion of one approved course in Logic, Scientific Reasoning, Statistics, Calculus, Computer Science, Information Science, etc.

Natural Science
(9–12 cr.)

Completion of three approved courses from the Life and Physical Sciences, distributed 2, 1 over the sciences categories—e.g., 2 Life, 1 Physical or 2 Physical, 1 Life.

Foreign Language
(up to 10 cr.)

Completion of three years of foreign language in high school

OR

Approval of foreign language AP credit

OR

First-year foreign language course(s)

Literature (3 cr.)

Completion of an approved course

Music or Art (3 cr.)

Completion of an approved first-level course

Second Lit/Music/Art/Creative Expression (3 cr.)

Completion of an approved second-level course in one of the fields listed here or of an approved first-level course from an art, music, or creative expression field not already studied.

Philosophy (3 cr.)

Completion of an approved course

Social Science (3 cr.)

Completion of an approved course

History (3 cr.)

Completion of an approved course

Public Policy (3 cr.)

Completion of an approved course, or completion of a second approved social science or history course

International Culture (9 cr.)

Completion of a minimum of three approved courses from at least two international categories: global, comparative, or regional. At least of one of the three courses must be designated non-Western.
