Professional Interests

Professor Quimpo's area of interest is water resources engineering and development including hydrology, hydraulics, mathematical modeling and simulation, system planning and design. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in surface and ground water hydrology, physical and stochastic hydrology, probability, risk and reliability in civil engineering and numerical methods in pollutant transport. His research has included projects in watershed modeling, remote sensing for resource assessment, oil spill analysis, small hydropower, geographic information systems, and reliability theory applied to water supply infrastructure analysis. These have been sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Interior, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the State of Pennsylvania and the City of Pittsburgh. His international activities include visiting positions, invited presentations and research projects in South America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia. Dr. Quimpo has received the Beitle-Veltri Teaching Excellence Award from the School of Engineering and the Professor of the Year Award from ASCE. He is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Geophysical Union, the Environmental and Water Resources Institute, International Association of the Hydrologic Sciences and the American Water Works Association. He served as member and chairman of several national committees and has published extensively in the journals and proceedings of these professional organizations.
