Professional Interests

Dr. Neufeld is an Environmental Engineer, with expertise in environmental process fundamentals and pollution control technology. Research interests encompass biological and advanced physical/ chemical contaminant management systems, and waste recovery technologies. Dr. Neufeld's teaching includes introductory undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering courses, and graduate courses in environmental chemistry, microbiology, environmental engineering processes, industrial waste management, and solid waste management/hazardous waste management. Present research projects embrace environmental technology for energy and power production, acid rock and acid mine discharge issues, green roof applications for water management, and membrane systems for liquid/solids separation and combined sewer overflow management. Prior research includes electroosmotic pressure enhanced liquid/solids separations, integrated treatment systems for synthetic fuels manufacture, biological nitrification of coke plant effluents, biotower technology for BETX contaminated groundwaters, starvation mode biodegradation, gas phase biofiltration, biological dehalogenation of PCBs, electrolytic and activated carbon applications to chromium recovery from plating wastes, energy from waste materials, accumulation of heavy metals onto bioslimes, sludge management for Allegheny County, stabilization and solidification of hazardous heavy metal containing wastes using clean coal technology byproducts, environmental impacts of fly ash fortified autoclaved aerated concrete, and incorporation of toxicity into residuals management.
