Professional Interests
Dr. Landis' research and teaching interests in the arena of sustainable environmental engineering encompass topics such as sustainability, bio-based production, bio-based and alternative fuels, modeling environmental variability and uncertainty, product end-of-life management, industrial ecology, and life cycle analysis. Her recent work has illustrated the environmental tradeoffs of transitioning to bioproducts from petroleum derived commodities in an effort to mitigate climate change that result in other deleterious environmental effects such as increased regional eutrophication and decreased air quality throughout the bioproducts' life cycle.
Sustainable solutions are inherently interdisciplinary; Dr. Landis' research and teaching endeavors are collaborative and multidisciplinary. Past and present collaborations include the University of Pittsburgh's Mascaro Sustainability Initiative, the US Environmental Protection Agency, Chicago's Notebart Nature Museum, Chicago's Institute for Environmental Science and Policy, Clemson University, Purdue University, and Carnegie Mellon University.
Several of Dr. Landis' specific research topics include:
- Modeling nutrient flows and assessing environmental impacts of bioproduction
- Technology development for non-intensive alternative agricultural resources for bioproducts
- Optimizing bioproduct end-of-life options
- Creating Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) tools that incorporate uncertainty, variability, and economics
