News Alumni NewsClass of 1972: Celebrating 35 Years...The Civil and Environmental Engineering Class of 1972 are invited to a 35-year reunion in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh Homecoming Celebration on October 19 and 20, 2007. The class will have a specially-reserved area at the annual Pitt School of Engineering Homecoming Celebration on Friday night, and an additional reserved area at the Pre-game Pep Rally at Heinz Field on Saturday. Dennis Yeskey Named Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering 2007 Distinguished AlumnusDennis Yeskey (BSCE '72, MSCE '73) has been named the 2007 Distinguished Alum for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Yeskey is the national director of the Real Estate Capital Markets Practice of Deloitte & Touche USA and, in the past, was the head of the Tri-State/New York City Real Estate Services Practice. He also is a senior managing director of Deloitte’s National Real Estate Services Practice and is based in the New York office. In these roles, he is responsible for developing and delivering all professional services to major domestic and global real estate investors including opportunity funds, private equity players, banks, insurance companies, pension funds, endowments, and foundations, along with family offices and other types of investors and owners (e.g., large developers, non-real estate corporations). Yeskey, who joined Deloitte in 1995, played a pivotal role in the development of both of these practices, which have successfully grown more than 20 percent annually over the past eight years and have become one of the strongest in their respective arenas. Pitt Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Receive AwardsTwo Pitt Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni have been chosen to receive awards from the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania. Robert H. Luffy (BSCE '72) has been named the 2007 William Metcalf Award Winner. The Metcalf Award is the highest award presented by the Engineers’ Society and is named after the founding president of ESWP, William Metcalf. The Metcalf Award is the lifetime achievement award for significant contributions to engineering in fields associated with Western Pennsylvania. Luffy is president and CEO of American Bridge Company, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pa., and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Highway Engineers, and the Construction Industry Round Table. He is also very active within the community of Pittsburgh, where he served as chairman of the Pittsburgh Zoo for five years and was the former chairman of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania, where he is still a board member. Luffy is also a member of the Board of Visitors for the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering and was awarded the 1997 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering. A more detailed biography of Luffy is available on the ESWP Web site. Charles (Chuck) Russell (BSCE '59, MSCE '70) has been named 2007 ESWP Engineer of the Year. The Engineer of the Year is selected by the ESWP Awards Committee based on outstanding leadership, innovative guidance, and service to the engineering profession and society. Russell is senior vice president, Michael Baker Corporation, and has been a longtime member of the Civil Engineering Alumni Club. He also serves on the department’s visiting committee, and was recognized in 1999 with the Distinguished Alumni Award. For more than three decades, Russell has supported the School of Engineering as a volunteer and a donor, as well as promoting the University within his company. A member of the visiting committee for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Russell has played a pivotal role in organizing and supporting the annual golf outing and monthly luncheon meetings of the civil and environmental engineering alumni. Alumni Notes in BriefElizabeth (Lisa) Abraham (MSCE '06) was awarded the prestigious AISC/Klingelhofer Fellowship. Administered by the American Institute of Steel Construction, this is the institute’s most competitive of 10 student fellowships awarded nationwide. Abraham has taken a position with Edwards and Kelcey in Chicago. Daniel Hull (MSCE '06) has taken a position as a structural engineer with NASA at Cape Canaveral and will be involved in retrofitting the Vehicle Assembly Building (one of the largest enclosed structures in the world) for the next generation of spacecraft. Keith Coogler (MSCE '06) has taken a position with Westinghouse in Monroeville, Pa., and will be working on the company’s recently announced multi-billion dollar contract to provide nuclear reactors to China. Jonathan Moses (MSCE '05) was awarded the 2005 Gary B. Multanen/CM Magazine student scholarship by the American Composites Manufacturers’ Association.
