Admissions Graduate Department Requirements

Departmental Admissions Requirements

Graduate students in Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering pursue course work as well as research, providing for a rewarding and stimulating professional experience. The programs are designed to allow the students to pursue advanced aspects of civil engineering, in preparation for additional career advancement. Course offerings accommodate full-time as well as part-time students. Each student is assigned an advisor who is a full-time faculty member in the department.

The department conducts research in all major technical areas. Interested students should visit our Research, Labs and Centers section to learn more.

Admission requirements include the following:

  1. A degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program, or, for international students, a program with similar requirements. Alternatively, students may be accepted with degrees in hard sciences (such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science) with a background equivalent to an undergraduate engineering degree in mathematics, physics, mechanics, and the courses basic to the program area of application. Some deficiencies may be corrected by admission to provisional graduate status, while the student completes certain required undergraduate courses.
  2. Undergraduate QPA equivalent to 3.00, based on a 4.00 scale.
  3. For international applicants, English language proficiency equivalent to a TOEFL score of 550 (600 for Ph.D.). If test results are not available, or if below 550, remedial classes may be required upon arrival, pending receipt of the test results. In addition, students with a TOEFL score below 650 will be asked to take the Michigan Test upon enrollment at the university, and may be required to take some remedial language courses. If admitted academically, an international applicant will be required to submit evidence of financial support for the entire anticipated period of study in order to obtain U.S. visa documents.

Applicants who do not satisfy some of the above requirements, but have strengths in other areas may be considered for provisional admission. Applicants interested in applying to any of the graduate programs should write directly to the Department Chair.
