Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Awards

Specific information regarding guidelines for the following monetary awards will be sent via email to the undergraduate student body.

The Chemical Engineering Faculty select the winners for the following awards:

American Institute of Chemical Engineers Award (also known as the Professional Promise Award)

This award is granted to senior AIChE members that have excellent academic records and also have internship, coop, and/or research experience that will make them successful in their career after graduation. Consider this as a "most likely to succeed" type of award rather than one based strictly on performance in school.

The winner of the AIChE Professional Promise Award must commit to attending the AIChE Local Section Student Night in February (even if they have already graduated). If the student will not make this commitment, they cannot accept the award.

Bashioum Award

This award is given to the student that has provided service to the department in the form of developing the student chapter of AIChE and its activities and helping the department or the freshman program. Dr. Bashioum was the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Chairman from 1919-1938.

Paul F. Fulton Memorial Scholarship

This is awarded to a petroleum engineering student. Dr. Fulton was a professor and head of the petroleum engineering department.

Dr. Morsi is solely responsible for the selection of this award.

Douglas Kenney Huber Memorial Award for Outstanding Senior (also known as the Outstanding Senior Award)

This award is granted to the student that excels in his/her academic, research, coop/intern and service record as an undergraduate. Douglas Huber was an excellent senior who passed away suddenly in the midst of his senior year several years ago.

Margaret A. Thomas Award

This is awarded to the undergraduate woman that exhibits excellence in academics, research and/or internships/coops. Margaret Thomas was a chemical engineering student who died suddenly in an auto accident after she graduated.

Chiang Scholarship

Outstanding students in chemical Engineering. Named in honor of Shio-ming Chiang, Dr. Chiang's mother, who greatly influenced his academic career.

Lubrizol Foundation Scholarship

Outstanding students in Chemical Engineering.

Edward B. Stuart and Geraldine J. Stuart Memorial Scholarship

Dr. Stewart was a former head of the Chemical Engineering Department and Dean of the School of Engineering. This scholarship is provided to a deserving undergraduate in the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department currently enrolled as a sophomore or junior. This award would be based on "academic promise, integrity, creativity and eagerness."

John W. Tierney Scholarship

For a junior or senior chemical engineer. Named for our Professor, Dr. Tierney.

PPG Undergraduate Research and Industrial Experience Scholarships

The deadlines for this scholarship are November 7th for the fall term, March 7th for the spring term and July 7th for the summer term.

Any student who has completed an assignment that involves research or a task associated with an industry (e.g. writing operating procedures, quality control, process safety, successful troubleshooting assignments, etc.) are eligible. Research and industrial experience will be given equal consideration; research presentations will not be favored over industrial presentations. Your project can be related to coop, internships, jobs held while in school, undergraduate research, research at other universities, etc. In essence, any type of industrial or research experience performed while you were an undergraduate is appropriate.

Interested students need to submit a title, name, place where work was performed, and a 50-200 word abstract in the form of an attached Word document to the Undergraduate Secretary. All students who have completed 1 or more ChE 1097 research courses must compete at least one time prior to graduation to receive credit for ChE 1097.
