Graduate NIH Training in Biotechnology

Application Process

You are invited to participate in an NIH-supported training program in Biotechnology and Bioprocess Analysis, Design, and Optimization. This program is in collaboration with The Carnegie Mellon University.

Admission Statement & Selection Criteria

Life science and engineering students are welcome to apply. The mission of the Program is to infuse engineering design and analysis into improved cell-based or cell-targeted processes. Emphasis exists on dual engineering and life science mentoring. Selection decisions are based on:

  • student’s academic qualifications,
  • the degree to which the research area fits within the Program’s focus, and
  • the extent the student will receive training from two or more Training Faculty where ideally, life science and engineering co-advising occur involving both participating universities.

Admissions Process

Engineering students should submit by December 1st:

  • A completed and signed application form
  • Copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts
  • Copy of student's GRE test results
  • Letter of recommendation from faculty advisor (BTP faculty member)
  • Statement of intent from student (including research & biotechnology interests)

The statement of intent letter should summarize the student’s background and how they foresee their research program fitting into the Training Program research mission and mentoring emphasis. Submit your application to Mr. Robert Toplak (toplak@engr.pitt.edu), Department of Chemical Engineering, Room 1249 Benedum Hall, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15261.

Decisions will be announced by December 20th.

Life science students should submit by April 1st:

  • A completed and signed application form
  • Copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts
  • Copy of student's GRE test results
  • Letter of recommendation from faculty advisor (BTP faculty member)
  • Statement of intent from student (including research & biotechnology interests)

The letter should summarize their background and how they foresee their research program fitting into the Training Program research mission and mentoring emphasis. Submit your application to Mr. Robert Toplak (toplak@engr.pitt.edu), Department of Chemical Engineering, Room 1249 Benedum Hall, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15261.

Decisions will be announced by May 1st.

Financial Support Timeline

For engineering or life science students, financial support will commence at the start of the second year in residence.

Program Requirements

Please review the program summary and program components. A supported student is expected to fully participate in all required courses and program components. Support will be discontinued should a student fail to fully participate.
