Professional Interests

After spending two years as a NATO Research Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Russell joined the University of Pittsburgh as Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering in 1989 and was Chairman of the Department from 1995 - 2006.

Dr. Russell's research has focused on the symbiotic interface between enzymes and materials. Recently Dr. Russell's group has focused on:

  • Biocatalytic detoxification of chemical weapons
  • Study of proteins in extreme environments
  • Biocatalytic polymer synthesis
  • Biotechnology in supercritical fluids
  • Biomaterial design synthesis for tissue engineering
