Professional Interests

Professor Kovalchuk joined the department in 1997. Prior to this, he was a Professor and Research Group Director at the Institute of Chemistry of National Organic Materials of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Krasnoyarsk/Russia), an Associated Professor of Chemistry at Krasnoyarsk State University (Krasnoyarsk/Russia), and a Research Associate at the Institute of Catalysis in the Russian Academy of Sciences (Novosibirsk/Russia).

Professor Kovalchuk's research involves the range of heterogeneous catalysis, especially catalyst preparation and characterization.

Recent work has focused on:

  • Synthesis of supported catalysts using mixed metal carbonyl cluster precursors
  • Heterogeneously catalyzed olefin hydroformylation
  • Synthesis of ethanol from CO+H2
  • Supported bimetallic catalysts for chlorofluorocarbon dechlorination
  • Three way automotive catalysts
  • Selective catalystic reduction of NOx
