About Us

Department Overview

The Chemical and Petroleum Engineering department at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering was established in 1910, making it the first department for petroleum engineering in the world.

Today, our department features more than 30 expert faculty, a host of dedicated staff, more than 20 state-of-the-art laboratories and learning centers, and an education that enriches with strong fundamentals and hands-on experience.

The department offers students a wide range of opportunities, from a Co-op Program where students and industry interact, to powerful resources for research and the chance to focus on one of five key engineering areas:

Benedum Hall

Dedicated in 1971, Benedum Hall is home to exploration and discovery.
