Stephen Stana (1913-2003) and his wife Helen raised a family of 2 girls and 3 boys. His desire to go to college was overcome by the 1929 depression and the reality of supporting his mother by working in a glass making facility after high school. His drive to always find an easier way to do something was recognized by the Walworth Valve Company. He worked there as a self taught industrial engineer for over 30 years. He developed a knack for fixing most anything and his patience with wood working earned him a reputation as a craftsman that continued into his retirement years.
From an early age, all his children knew that they were expected to work hard in school, get good grades, get scholarships, and go to college. All five achieved this goal. While he never pushed any specific career for his children, it was clear that he was especially proud that all three of his boys chose a career in engineering. Regis Stana (BSChE ’63, MSChE ’65, PhD ’67), John Stana (BSEE ’71, MSEE ’73) (Deceased 1993), and James Stana (BSME ’73, MSME ’74) were graduates of the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering.
A Legacy Fund has been established by Regis and James Stana in the name of Stephen Stana to honor his commitment to engineering. |
