The Campaign for Engineering Legacy Funds

More than 30 years as a member of the mechanical engineering faculty left such an impression on Norm Wackenhut, he recently established a charitable gift annuity (CGA) through Pitt, with the proceeds designated to create two Engineering Legacy Funds. Wackenhut designated one fund to specifically support his former department, while the other will be unrestricted to meet needs throughout the Swanson School of Engineering. He funded the CGA with a gift of $85,000, and the annuity will now provide him with an annual income payment for the rest of his life. Since he funded his annuity with a gift of appreciated stock, he also received considerable tax advantages by avoiding capital gains tax on these securities.

In addition to his tenure as a long-time member of the ME faculty, Wackenhut also earned three degrees from the department, including a B.S. in 1943, M.S. in 1953 and Ph.D. in 1971. He is well-remembered by current faculty for his pioneering research in the 1960s on early models of mechanical hearts.

Donors Empower Pitt

Facilities, professorships, scholarships, fellowships—all are crucial.
