The Campaign for Engineering Legacy Funds

Growing up in Latrobe, Pa. as the son of a steelworker, Ed Sobota (BSMEE ’67) knew early on the direction his educational and career path would take him. He earned his BS in metallurgical engineering in 1967 and went to work in the same mill as his father. He chose to go there since the company’s scholarship had made his Pitt degree possible. He spent four years there, but as the 1970s came around, the steel industry changed and he saw just how tenuous a job in the steel industry could be as small companies were increasingly acquired or closed. He returned to Pitt to earn a master’s degree in teaching and soon took a job at Ligonier Valley High School, teaching courses in math and chemistry.

He couldn’t stay out of the steel industry for long though, and started a consulting company in 1974 that eventually evolved into the company he heads today, TechSpec, Inc., located in Derry, Pa.  The company is an established leader in the niche metals market of titanium finishing, and Ed has also built a reputation as a leader in the industry, including serving as the president of the International Titanium Association.

Donors Empower Pitt

Facilities, professorships, scholarships, fellowships—all are crucial.
