The Campaign for Engineering Legacy Funds

A 1977 BSME alumnus, Fred Kocher spent his entire career in the aviation industry, specializing in maintenance operations. He began his career with US Airways as a structures and power plant engineer, steadily moving up the corporate ladder over the next two decades to his final position there, senior vice president of maintenance operations. He later joined Rolls-Royce North America as senior vice president of customer support, working out of the company’s major aircraft engine manufacturing operation in Indianapolis.  His last position before retiring was leading the opening activities of a 2 million square-foot airline maintenance facility in Indianapolis, operated by AAR, Inc.  The facility had been built by United Airlines in the mid-1990s but financial troubles at United led to its closing, and the state-of-the-art facility sat vacant for two years before being purchased by AAR.

In addition to establishing the Frederick L. and Gloria J. Kocher Engineering Legacy Fund, Fred has also served as an active member of the school’s Board of Visitors. In 2004, he was recognized for his career accomplishments and service to Pitt by being honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
