According to Joe Guthrie (BSMEE ’59), who lives near Houston, Texas, Pitt gave him the education that helped make possible a 35-year, worldwide career with ExxonMobil along with a supportive wife and family.
Joe met Greta at Pitt, where she earned a degree from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1955.
One of their three sons, Neil, earned a history degree from Pitt in 1984 and is now a practicing attorney in Red Bank, N.J.
So when the couple’s 50th wedding anniversary approached in the summer of 2005, they decided to establish a permanent reminder of their days at Pitt through an Engineering Legacy Fund. Thanks to a generous three-to-one matching gift program available to ExxonMobil retirees, the Guthries established their fund with just one gift, but are already adding to it. In addition, Neil and his brothers decided to establish a Legacy Fund of their own, which was created in honor of their parents. Both Joe and Greta’s fund and their sons’ fund were designated unrestricted for school-wide needs, as determined by the dean.
