Undergraduates in other departments can satisfy a minor in Bioengineering by taking one BioE seminar and five courses for a total of 16 credits:

1. Bioengineering Seminar - 0 Credits

  • BIOENG 1085 Introduction to Bioengineering Seminar

2. Basic Life Science Course - 3 Credits

Acceptable course options:

  • BIOSC 0150 Foundations of Biology I
  • BIOSC 0160 Foundations of Biology II
  • BIOSC 1000 Introductory Biochemistry
  • BIOSC 1250 Introduction to Human Physiology
  • HRS 1020 Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology
  • HRS 1022 Human Anatomy
  • HRS 1023 Human Physiology
  • HRS 1024 Introduction to Neurosciences

3. Course in Statistics - 4 Credits

  • ENGR 0020 Probability and Statistics for Engineers I

4. Three Elective Courses - 9 Credits

  • At least two courses in Bioengineering (BIOENG)

These undergraduate bioengineering courses provide students with experience in engineering applications in the life sciences. Students who desire more experience in the life sciences could take another life science course and two bioengineering electives.

Prior approval must be submitted to the Bioengineering Undergraduate Coordinator, Dr. Richard Debski (743 BENDM or genesis1@pitt.edu) to use substitute courses.

Students pursuing a B.S. Degree in Bioengineering can satisfy a minor in a number of other departments, and should contact those departments directly for requirements.
