Duties and Responsibilities include:
• Generate, edit and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to guide the company

• Ensure that appropriate cGMP documentation is generated, revised, approved, and maintained

• Assist with the compilation of product-related documentation, including validation activities, to support regulatory filings (e.g., NDA supplements)
• Review Master and Batch Production Records
• Assist in the coordination and compliance with requests of regulatory authorities during internal inspections and during inspections of contract service providers
• Work with relevant technical experts to ensure that corrective and preventive actions associated with manufacturing-related activities are addressed and implemented
• Identify and/or assist in the resolution of potential or existing quality issues that may jeopardize cGMP compliance or regulatory position
• Ensure the review and/or approval of batch-specific manufacturing-related documentation (e.g., executed batch records, deviations, investigations)
• Provide quality support to manufacturing process validation and quality improvement initiatives
• Filing and tracking completed records required by FDA
• Printing controlled documents and labels for pre-product administration and filing

Position Qualifications:
• At minimum, an undergraduate degree in any life science, business, engineering or management field or acceptable related experience

In this role, you will be responsible for assessing the functionality of shoes by conducting fit and wear testing of shoes during development, commercialization and production to support product development timelines. Responsible for testing one or more categories of in line products. Collect and record sensory and mechanical data of development and production shoes following department guidelines in an unbiased, rigorous, scientifically sound and timely manner.

* This role will assess how well shoes fit through fit testing. 1. Software Engineer – Software Quality Assurance Methods (Internship/Co-op)
Project Scope:
Medical device companies must function under strict quality assurance guidelines. Therefore, for software engineers aspiring to work in this industry, experience in software quality assurance is invaluable. The successful candidate will also gain exposure to the latest C++ coding standards for medical devices, as well as to control algorithms used for cardiac assist devices.
Brief Job Description:
The student will join the Software Engineering team to implement the Polyspace automated static code checker for software verification of Abiomed’s latest products. Polyspace verifies C++ code for embedded applications by detecting run-time errors before the code is compiled and executed. This advanced verification technology uses formal methods not only to detect errors, but to prove mathematically that certain classes of run-time errors do not exist.

2. Software Engineer - Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump Viewer (Internship)
Project Scope:
The intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is widely used to support patients suffering from cardiogenic shock, often after cardiac surgery or myocardial infarction. The timing of balloon inflation and deflation is critically important to the performance of the device. The intern will assist in designing and implementing a graphical waveform and event viewer for an IABP.
Brief Job Description:
The student will join the Software Engineering team to improve existing test tools for Abiomed’s IABP products. The intern will use various charting and database technologies to automatically import device data to an SQL database, and then develop a viewer to efficiently visualize and analyze the results. An initial version of the viewer has been developed, but a number of functional and performance improvements are required. The intern will document changes to the viewer design and associated test protocol. Additional software-related tasks may be assigned as time permits.
Qualifications:
• Sophomore, Junior, Senior or Grad student pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering

3. Software Engineer – Remote Monitoring (Co-op)
Project Scope
With increased at-home use of the AbioCor total artificial heart (TAH) and the AB5000 ventricular assist device (VAD), it is vital to develop a remote monitoring system that allows clinicians to assess device performance without having the patient return to the hospital. This technology is also planned for in-hospital console products such as the iPulse and Impella.
Brief Job Description:
The student will join the Software Engineering team to implement this platform technology, including:
• Remote monitoring protocol design
• Remote monitoring server design and implementation
• A Windows Mobile version of the AbioCor remote monitoring client application that allows the user to monitor the device in real-time and store data in SQL PE
• A Windows Mobile application for retrieving and plotting data for trending purposes
• A self-contained, highly adaptable add-on module based on Bluetooth and cellular technology that will connect ABIOMED devices to a remote monitoring hub

4. Product Development Engineer – Heart Valve Prosthesis (Co-op)
Project Scope:
Abiomed heart valve technology is used in ventricular assist devices and total artificial hearts. This applied research project uses Abiomed’s valve technology as a basis for developing a stand-alone prosthetic replacement valve. The internship will include practical training and involvement in all aspects of producing and evaluating polymeric heart valve prostheses. Specific project activities include: valve design optimization; in vitro calcification modeling, and in vitro blood compatibility modeling to compare polyurethane valves with tissue valves; and fluid dynamic studies on critical areas.
Brief Job Description:
The successful applicant will be required to:
• assist in the design of valve components
• participate in the manufacturing of prototypes using a polyurethane dip molding process
• provide input into process improvement
• characterize the hemodynamic performance of the valve (involving test design, setup, and data collection)

5. Mechanical Design Engineer – Artificial Myocardium (Internship)
Project Scope:
The goal of this project is the development of an innovative cardiac assist device for use in infants and neonates following reconstructive surgery for congenital heart defects. The PediBooster is an extremely pliant and thin artificial myocardium wrapped around the heart. This artificial myocardium, which is non-blood-contacting, works with the contraction-relaxation cycles of the native myocardium to provide enhanced contractility. The device can be driven by a standard pneumatic console for a ventricular assist device (VAD) or intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP). The intern will assist in the development and testing of various actuator designs, both on the bench and in animal studies.
Brief Job Description:
• The student will join the Research & Development team, and serve as a mechanical engineering resource for the development of the actuator subsystem.
• Primary tasks will be mechanical design and documentation using CAD systems, and, if needed, rapid prototyping of new design concepts.
• The student will assist with performance test procedures, data acquisition, analysis, and documentation.
• Some travel to an off-site animal facility for prototype testing will likely be required. These studies will involve collaboration with academic researchers.

Project Scope:
Manufacturing engineering plays a key role in developing processes that reduce the cost and improve the quality of medical devices. The manufacturing engineering intern will participate in a medley of projects including intra-aortic balloon (IAB) development and manufacturing process improvements to lower the cost and enhance the quality of various cardiac assist products. The project will include research and data collection for process control and improvement. Abiomed stresses 6-Sigma and lean manufacturing techniques.
Brief Job Description:
The intern will work with the IAB Product Development team on the design, fabrication, and
6-Sigma testing of a new balloon. The intern will also join the Manufacturing Engineering team to work on various projects including:
• Process development & improvement and performance characterization for AbioCor II thoracic unit

Research Engineering Internship
ICx-Agentase has hosted a number of interns from BioE and already has hired 5 Pitt BioE alumni. This is a paid internship, so please consider it seriously.
ICx-Agentase is developing enzyme-based continuous monitors for chemical hazards, including chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals. The endeavor consists of two essentially parallel efforts. One aspect of the work focuses on adapting enzyme polymer sensor chemistries into a continuous detection format. The other component of this effort is directed toward the development of hardware devices that will employ enzyme-based sensors in a continuous monitoring format.
This internship position will support hardware development for all of the continuous monitoring systems, specifically water monitoring. The candidate will be responsible for performing experiments, setting up hardware systems, operating and testing analysis equipment, making simple chemical solutions, keeping a lab notebook, and maintaining a safe working environment. A preferred candidate will have completed at least his or her sophomore year. Wet bench chemistry experience, knowledge of basic analytical equipment (pH meters, spectrophotometers) is strongly preferred. This paid internship is part time (15-25 hours/week – hours flexible) and will last through December 2007 with a possibility of extension through April 2008. Purpose of Position: This position will provide support to the Innovations department, which is engaged in biomedical research and development of either enhancements to existing Medrad products or areas not currently within our business scope.
