Term: Fall and Spring

Description:A research project involving a literature search, planning, design, fabrication, experimentation, analysis, and technical report writing performed by the student. The work is completed under the guidance of a faculty member on an approved subject and culminates in an oral presentation at a technical symposium.  The minimum research requirement is at least 9 hour per week for a semester (the same or previous semester of taking BIOE 1002) and do some data analysis.  Students are allowed to work with any of the faculty listed in the BIOE website, and anyone in the Pittsburgh area performing bioengineering research.  Students are encouraged to go ahead and email faculty about volunteering for them but let them know the research would be for BIOE 1002.

Prerequisites: Bioengineering Student, Junior or Senior Standing

Required Texts: None

Course Objectives: To give students practical experience within an academic research environment that includes project planning, design or experimentation, and analysis. Oral presentation and technical writing skills are introduced as well as the critique of research projects.

Class/Laboratory Schedule: Students work in laboratory / clinical facilities throughout the term (the same or previous semester of taking BIOENG 1002). Also, class meets regularly to review progress, and learn presentation and writing skills.

Students should fill out an Intramural Internship Application with their intended faculty sponsor.
