Department of Bioengineering to Host Biomedical Engineering Society Annual Fall Meeting

The Department of Bioengineering at University of Pittsburgh will host the 2009 Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Annual Fall Meeting, led by Conference Chair Professor Harvey Borovetz and Program Chair Professor David Vorp.

This annual meeting of BMES, the lead society for the field, will be held October 7-10, at David Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh.

Befitting Pittsburgh and its topography and history of being a leader in the field, the theme for this year's meeting is "Bridging the Three Rivers of Biology, Engineering and Medicine". The meeting will highlight the importance of Biomedical Engineering/Bioengineering as the intersection of biology, medicine, and engineering.

About the program

Attendance to the meeting will include delegates from all over the world. This year's diverse program will offer approximately 500 platform and 1,000 poster presentations covering the broad scope of biomedical engineering and bioengineering research. The 12 programmatic tracks to be organized are: Cardiovascular Engineering; Respiratory Engineering; Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Engineering; Neural Engineering; Cellular and Molecular Engineering; Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials; Computational Biology, Bioinformatics and Systems Biology; Device Technologies - from Nano to Micro Scales; Biomedical Imaging and Optics; Biomedical Engineering Education; Biomedical Robotics; and New Frontiers and Special Topics.

Pre-Meeting Workshops will be held on Wednesday, October 7, and cover a variety of topics, from how to be a bioengineering expert witness consultant, to design and fabrication of microsystems and microscale tissue engineering, to new optical imaging techniques for biomedical research, to neural engineering in real-time.

The BMES meetings bring together academic leaders, students, and industrial representatives once a year, for a few days of condensed but highly stimulating discussions and presentations of the newest ideas, innovations and products in this growing field. We hope to see you here in Pittsburgh in October!
